Background and facts

The most common species of cockroaches found in Qatar. In general, cockroaches are with six legs, flat and oval and with a pair of antennae. German cockroaches’ range in size from 1/2 cm to 2cm long. They are light brown or tan colored and often seen with two dark stripes on their back.

Cockroaches prefer warm and high humid environment, closer to food and water sources. Cockroaches frequently enter residential & commercial properties by hiding in grocery bags, cardboard boxes and used furniture & appliances. You can find them around the bathroom or kitchen.

German cockroaches will feed on almost anything, including soap, glue and toothpaste, mainly the leftover food particles in kitchen, oil grease and the open food items.

If you find one in your home, it’s likely there are hundreds of them hiding in cracks and crevices. German cockroaches can breed fast, at a rate of up to six generations per annum.

Impact

German cockroaches are not only a nuisance – they carry diseases and germs. These germs are then transferred to food and common surfaces that we touch.

About American Cockroaches

American Cockroaches
(Periplaneta americana)

Background and Facts

American Cockroaches are flattened from top to bottom with two pairs of wings folded flat over the back. Rarely fly but walk extremely fast.

Most common among species around human habits. They can survive weeks without food and water.

The length of a adult roach varies from 35-40 mm. Six legs and 2 antennae extending from head and equal length as the body. They looks reddish brown to dark brown & also has yellow margin behind the head.

A female roach can produce an egg case (ootheca) in 3-7 days. It contains approx. 16 eggs and incubation period 24-38 days.

They can be found in bathrooms gullies , sewer lines and dumpsters, they mostly in groups seeking water and moisture in dark areas.

They feeds on a vast range of material as beer, potted plants, wallpaper paste, soap, postage stamps, fermented material, pet food and human food. They eats contaminated food too.

Impact

They produce a strong unpleasant odor and also carries bacteria which cause various diseases and infections. So, it’s also known as unhygienic scavenger, plays a supplementary role in various disease and allergic reaction.

They are called the most common insect causes damage and cost for commercial sector in loss of goodwill and money.
